Science | Applied Mathematics

Applied Mathematics is the study of how mathematics may be employed to solve real life problems such as may occur in technology, engineering, economics etc. However the Leaving Certificate Applied Mathematics syllabus focuses on physics and mechanics. Hence it will complement the Leaving Certificate Physics course.

Leaving Certificate Applied Mathematics Syllabus
The following are a list of topics studied:

  • Newton's Laws of Motion *
  • Motion under acceleration *
  • Relative velocity Motion of projectiles *
  • Motion of connected particles
  • Oscillations + Static's Turning forces *
  • Differential equations *+
  • Impacts and collisions Motion in a circle *

* Indicates the topics that are on the Leaving Certificate Physics Course.
+ Indicated that the techniques used here are also used in the Leaving Certificate Maths Course.

It is not advisable that a student undertake this course without the minimum of grade C in Junior Certificate Higher Level Maths.
Applied Maths is taught .........There is no laboratory work involved.

In sixth year there are additional classes at l........... in the second and third terms. If there are any difficulties in a particular topic then small group work may also be arranged.

The pursuit of third level courses in the sciences, computing and especially engineering benefit from the study of applied mathematics.
