Science | Biology

Biology is the study of life. The current biology course, revised in recent years has introduced more contemporary issues and modern technological advances. Biology is a fascinating subject offering many interesting areas of study. It provides an appreciation of the variety of organisms found in our world and the measured required to ensure that these organisms and the environment are protected for future generations. It can also help with an understanding of topical and media issues. Studying biology teaches about the workings of our body resulting in more informed lifestyle choices.

Leaving Certificate Biology Syllabus

Unit 1 - The Study of Life

  • Scientific method - learning about experimentation and scientific processes
  • Characteristics of life - how do we decide if something is living or not
  • Nutrition - bio molecules needed, their structure etc.
  • Principles of ecology - habitats, human influence on environment etc.
  • Study of an ecosystem - comprehensive practical investigation of a habitat.

Unit 2 - The Cell

  • Cell structure - internal structure of cells
  • Cell metabolism - enzymes, photosynthesis, respiration and movement between cells
  • Cell continuity - cell division
  • Cell diversity - different types of cells and their functions, organisation of cells
  • Genetics - DNA, inheritance, evolution, genetic engineering

Unit 3 - The Organism

  • Diversity of organisms - variety of living things e.g. bacteria, fungi etc.
  • Organisation and vascular structure - structure/transport in plants/humans
  • Transport and nutrition - both in plants and humans
  • Breathing system and excretion - gas exchange and waste disposal in plants/humans
  • Responses to stimuli - plant growth responses and nervous and hormonal responses in humans. (Also the human immune responses).
  • Reproduction and growth - reproduction in flowering plants/humans

In addition to the theory covered in the units outlined above there are 22 mandatory experiments. These experiments are carried out during 5th and 6th year at appropriate stages during coursework

Careers
