Nigerian Teachers visit Ireland
The recent Worldwise teacher visit from our partner school, Louisville Girls Secondary School, Abuja, Nigeria to Ramsgrange Community School which took place 3rd - 8th October 2010. The visit was a great success. The main business of the week was to write a partnership agreement which will provide a framework to strengthen links between the two schools and this was achieved.
The students involved in Worldwise, of which TY form the core group, had a number of opportunities to meet with the Nigerian teachers. The activities included a workshop entitled "What is development?" (facilitated by One World in Waterford), a cultural exchange of music and dance, a visit to the County Sports Day in New Ross and a demonstration of Nigerian cookery.
The teachers also had a number of opportunities to experience some of the historical sites and cultural experiences on offer around Wexford which included the Dunbrody Famine Ship, Hooklight House, Ferrycarraig Heritage Park and the Mummurs, in Ballycullane.
To sustain the partnership the students in Ramsgrange and Abuja will engage in a joint project which will examine the Millennium Development Goal "Sustainable Environment". They will examine the issue of waste and recycling in their respective schools and then the wider communities in which the students live. They will discuss their findings through E-journals on the internet. This is the first of many projects which it is hoped the students will participate in together.
Sadly on the 14th October Sr. Carmel Mary, Principal of Louisville Girls' Secondary School passed away. This was a sad loss for the St. Louis sisters, Louisville Girls' Secondary School, and the Worldwise project. She was instrumental in developing the partnership between the two schools and worked tirelessly to ensure its success. We wish to take this opportunity to pass on our condolences to the St. Louis Sisters.
