Environment & Sustainability Education
At Ramsgrange Community School, we believe that education has a vital role to play in helping young people understand, protect and shape the world around them. Environment and Sustainability Education empowers our students with the knowledge, skills, values and confidence to make informed choices, take responsible action and contribute positively to a more sustainable future.
Our approach extends beyond the classroom. We aim to provide students with meaningful opportunities to investigate real environmental challenges, develop solutions and translate learning into action. In doing so, students develop not only environmental awareness, but also important lifelong skills including critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, collaboration, leadership and active citizenship.
Sustainability is embedded across many aspects of school life at RCS. Our students engage with initiatives including Green Schools, GLOBE Ireland, STRIPE Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition, Junk Kouture, biodiversity and horticulture projects, environmental research, climate action and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Student projects have explored important issues including air quality, coastal pollution, road run-off, biodiversity and the use of native plants to reduce environmental pollutants.
Our commitment is also reflected in our RCS Biodiversity Policy, Gardening and Green Schools activities, and opportunities for students to take leadership roles in caring for and improving our school environment. We are particularly proud when student learning leads to genuine action, innovation and recognition at local and national level.
Through Environment & Sustainability Education, we encourage every student to recognise that positive change can begin with individual choices but grows through collective responsibility and community action.
In keeping with our school values of Respect, Community and Success, our goal is to develop environmentally responsible young people who understand that caring for our school, our community and our planet is a responsibility shared by us all.
